Two letters on language

Graciously, Claudio Magris wrote back when in a letter I expressed my excitement over a guest lecture he held in Oslo in the fall of 1976.

A key sentence: "Mich auch interessiert außerordentlich das Verhältnis zwischen der Struktur des Satzes und jener der Wirklichkeit."

English: "I, too, am fascinated by the relationship between the structure of the sentence and that of reality."

After his visit to Oslo in August 1991, Max Cresswell and I wrote one another three letters each on anankastic conditionals. The exchange helped shape my thinking on them.

A key sentence in the third letter: "The present rules do seem more plausible because they explain why it appears, but isn't really so that the antecedent is 'you go to Harlem'."
